Genre, which comes from the French word for 'type', is important for both consumers and media producers. Consumers can make choices about media texts they wish to consume and media producers can create a media text for a specific audience.
If a media producer wants to gain an audience for a particular genre, then they have to understand the genre codes and conventions - and include them in the media text they are creating in order to make money from the films.
The first trailer I will be analysing is " Get Out "
Title : Get out
Genre : Horror
USP : The trailer starts with two unconventional characters a black man and a white woman dating. This interracial couple intrigues the audience as you see the man asking his girlfriend if her parents know he's black, this film is set in America a place we know now is fighting racial tension. The trailer then takes a dramatic turn from what you think is a Romantic Drama to something more sinister.

This clip indicates to the audience that the film was produced by Blumhouse the producers of "The Visit" "Insidious" and "The Gift" which are all horror films.
Upon watching the rest of the trailer you see the protagonist caught up in twists , turns and confusion as he realises his girlfriends parent's are racist and the town they live in keep black people as slaves referencing it back to the fact that slavery didn't end that long ago.
The same daunting line keeps being played "The mind is a terrible thing to waste"
The second trailer I will be analysing is "Fight Club"
Title : Fight Club
Genre : Drama
USP : The trailer starts with 20th Century Fox production company and if the audience recognise this they will know the film be good as 20th Century Fox are responsible for many successful films. The film stars hollywood actors such as Brad Pitt and Edward Norton who are well regarded for their good acting abilities. The film starts of with the phrase “I want you to hit me as hard as you can” subsequently suggesting that this film is quite violent.
The trailer "Fight Club" states many philosophical thoughts about the media and about how people need to release their inner selves after all the stress and repetitiveness of daily life, i.e their career's , love life , and social lives which most human beings can relate to.
The lighting in the trailer is very dark suggesting the dark tone of the film itself. The music is quite subtle but creates tension suggesting the film is of the thriller genre. It seems like a film aimed particularly at males due to the cast being predominantly male.
The last trailer I will be analysing is "Mean Girls"
Title : Mean Girls
Genre : Teen Film/Comedy
USP : The trailer starts with one of the most famous child actors of the 21st Century called Lindsay Lohan who starred in "The Parent Trap" and "Freaky Friday". Audience who have grown up watching Lindsay Lohan will easily be able to recognise her red locks and hair. Also starring Tina Fey a female comedian. The soundtrack used for this trailer includes urban artists such as Beyonce and Kelis.
